Title Ludwig van Beethoven's Work for Trios

The principle works for trio – piano, violin, cello – of Beethoven comprise:

  • seven trios for piano, violin, cello: Opus 1- No. 1 to 3; Opus 11 (“Gassenhauer” with violin or clarinet); Opus 38 (arrangement of the Septet opus 20); Opus 70 – No. 1 (“Ghost”) and 2; Opus 97 (“Archduke”);
  • one trio for piano, violin, cello of doubtful origin, opus 63;
  • two other trios published posthumously;: WoO 38 and WoO 39;
  • two series of variations for piano, violin and cello: Opus 44 and Opus 121a (“Kakadu” variations);
  • the transcription of the Symphony No. 2, Opus 36, for trio;
  • the Allegretto Hess 48 is also regularly performed.

The string trios – violin, viola and cello- are less numerous:

  • four string trios for violin, viola and cello: Oups 3; Opus 9, No. 1 to 3;
  • one serenade for string trio/Opus 8.

Beethoven composed few trios for piano, clarinet and cello:

  • Two trios for piano, clarinet and cello: Opus 11 (with violin or clarinet); Opus 38 (arrangement of Septet Opus 20).

There also exists one trio for wind instruments amongst the opus of Ludwig van Beethoven:

  • Trios for two oboes and cor anglais: Opus 87.

Title The Piano Trio opus 63 available at last!
The Piano Trio opus 63 available at last!
Trio Osiris: Peter Brunt, violin; Larissa Groeneveld, cello;
Ellen Corver, piano.

Piano trio Opus 63 (and piano trio Opus 1 No.3).

World premiere, recorded in 2003.

Opus 63 was “the unobtainable work” of Beethoven. Never recorded until this day, it is a warm performance accomplished by the Trio Osiris, which we now offer you.

If the authenticity of the Piano Trio adaptation of the string quartet Opus 4 is opened for discussion, it is a forgotten fact, explained in the discography, that no existing source indicates that Beethoven ever disowned the work. Form your own opinion and complete your disc collection with the unpublished work!

TitreThe two trios for clarinet by Ludwig van Beethoven
The two trios for clarinet by Ludwig van Beethoven Florent Héau, clarinet
Jérôme Ducros, piano
Henri Demarquette, cello
Zig-Zag Territoire - 2004

This CD collects the two trios for clarinet of Ludwig van Beethoven: the Trio Opus 11, composed in 1797, and the Trio Opus 38, composed in 1803. The last is an arrangement, made by the composer himself, of the Septet Opus 20.

The three soloists are dazzling in their delicacy and nuances. The musicality of their interpretation is consistent with Beethoven's great quality.

A big bravo to three great artists and also thanks to the Société Générale which discovered these remarkable talents and who, thanks to their musical patronage, allow us to share in this musical moment.
